When to replace a schoolbag with a backpack?

Is the schoolboy begging you to buy him a backpack, because the schoolbag is too "childish" for him and the others in the class no longer have it? And you don't know if it's time to change his schoolbag for a backpack?

If you are asking yourself these questions, we will try to answer them for you. It's not easy to determine exactly when is the right time to change your schoolbag, but we know a few factors that will definitely help you decide.

Schoolbags for first-graders are made to be as clutter-free as possible - that's why they only have one main compartment and a smaller pocket suitable for a lunch box. On the contrary, the backpack is structured and has more compartments. It is therefore confusing for children and there may be situations where they will not be able to find something in so many pockets. Therefore, you have to determine for yourself whether the child is already "mature" enough to be able to keep order in the backpack. In most cases, the most suitable time for exchange is from the 3rd grade (age 9-10), but there may be exceptions who will need a backpack as early as the 2nd grade.

Although backpacks have the same adjustable back straps as schoolbags, it's not quite the same. It is necessary that the backpack does not slide down on the back because it could cause problems with shoulder or back pain. The schoolbag is "firmer" and thus forces freshmen to have a straight posture, therefore, it is recommended to wear it for some time. However, if the child grows up unusually quickly after entering the first grade - it is clear that he has outgrown the school bag and the transition to a backpack is needed. Our Ars Una ergonomic backpacks are designed to transition directly from a schoolbag to a backpack. They are anatomically shaped, have a reinforced back (for proper development and growth) and, above all, are really light. Another thing you have to bear in mind is the physical condition, i.e. the figure of the child. The weight of a schoolbag and a backpack is not that different, but don't forget that students will be carrying much more textbooks and notebooks in their backpacks than in 1st and 2nd grade. The schoolbag weighs a maximum of 1.2 kg and the backpack a maximum of 1.3 kg (however, it is advisable to choose up to 900g). In short, a filled backpack should not weigh more than 10-15 % of the child's weight. Ergonomic backpacks are best recommended by orthopedists for children from 3rd to 9th grade (age 10-15).

Last but not least is the design. Yes, it also matters. If, now a big schoolboy decides that he won't go anywhere with the children's schoolbag, because it's for small children, then you'll have a really hard time convincing him that it's still suitable for him. Therefore, you will need to switch to a more mature backpack.
